Why I Have Zero Shame About My Kid’s Early Bedtime—and You Shouldn’t Either
Getting my daughter to bed by 7pm isn’t a walk in the park, but it’s definitely worth it. Between family dinners, homework, late meetings, and plain old defiance, it can be a battle some nights. But here’s the thing: parents who prioritize that early bedtime are doing what’s best for their child and their family, no matter how hard it gets.
So, no shame here. My kid goes to bed early, and here’s why:
It’s Essential for Their Health
Let’s be real—sleep is medicine. One of the best ways to boost a child’s immune system and keep them healthy is through proper rest. My daughter is tucked in by 7pm (7:15 at the absolute latest) and guess what? She rarely gets sick. Good sleep means fewer sick days, plain and simple.
It’s Crucial for Their Development
The science is solid. A 2010 study found that kids who don’t get enough sleep (we’re talking 10-12 hours) tend to score lower in literacy and math. Sooooo many children are missing out on the sleep they need, and it’s impacting their growth and learning. Dr. Erika Gaylor, the lead author, nailed it when she said that setting consistent bedtimes can make a big difference in a child’s development. Sleep isn’t just important in my home; it’s non-negotiable.
It Gives Me Time for Myself—and That’s OK
Listen, we all need a break. I’m a WAHM and it can be exhausting. When my daughter climbs in bed by by 7 p.m., I finally get a chance to breathe and be more than just “Mom.” I can unwind, recharge, eat a meal with two hands, and do something for myself. And guess what? That’s not selfish. It’s necessary for #momlife survival!

Once the kiddo is down for the night, my husband and I actually get time to connect. We talk, we plan, we even get to be intimate without worrying about little ears overhearing. That time together is crucial—it keeps our relationship strong.
It Makes Our Family Life Better
When everyone in the house gets a good night’s sleep, we’re all better for it. Mornings aren’t a cranky, rushed mess. Evenings aren’t full of exhausted meltdowns. We’re more patient, more present, and just generally happier to be around each other.
I feel I should note that life happens. Sometimes there’s a late family dinner, a community event, or we’re traveling and things don’t go as planned. And that’s okay, too. Flexibility is part of being a parent, and there’s no need to stress about the occasional late bedtime. Kids can handle a later night here and there; it’s the consistent routine that matters most. We aim for that early bedtime most nights because that’s what sets the foundation for good sleep habits, but we also know how to roll with the punches when needed.
There’s no shame in setting an early bedtime. It’s not easy, but it’s absolutely worth it. So, if you’re feeling guilty about putting your little one to bed early, stop. You’re doing a great job.
